Elim:Ryedaleis
a name that was adopted late in 2003 to reflect what we believe to be
our calling in God. On this site are details of the breadth of ministry
and service in which the church is involved.
The ministry operates through a number of different outlets. We have our own building, Hope Central, 62-64 Castlegate, Malton, which is used for various events, activities and services to the local community. Our Sunday worship services are held at Norton College, Langton Road Norton,
where, at present, there is sufficient room and ample free parking.
Hope Central, is where XTalk, our young people, meet on Tuesday evenings
during school term. In addition, there are several small fellowship
groups which meet generally on a weekly basis in homes scattered around
Ryedale.
We trust you will enjoy your visit to our site. If this raises any
questions in your mind, please do not hesitate to contact us; we would
love to hear from you.
If you live in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, or visit the area, you
are very welcome to join us. We trust that we may have the privilege of
welcoming you to our Church.
May God bless and keep you and all who are precious to you.
Thank you for visiting our site! Happy surfing!
Destination 'rest!'
A change is as good as a rest’, but is that true?Just because we’ve been on holiday, had a change of scenery, does it mean we’ve had a rest?In the book of Hebrews we are all invited to enter into God’s rest ‘today’.This is more than a holiday or a three day break; this is the idea of living in His care, in His hands, in His daily provision and finding rest from the struggle of endlessly working to provide for ourselves. This is not automatic, it is something that we have to continually review and challenge ourselves about. We are called to work, in fact, Paul taught that an honest day’s work would win the respect of others (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12) however, if we are not careful we can fool ourselves into believing we no longer need God because we can provide for ourselves, we become self sufficient. The writer of Hebrews tells us that God, after six days of work on creation, set aside a seventh day to rest. The pattern for a week was set, six days of work and a day to rest, to stop our labour and to be reminded that we are His people. The seventh day was the Sabbath, a day to worship God, to renew our perspective and to be reminded that Almighty God alone is our source of life.
As Moses led the Israelites through the desert Godprovided Manna from heaven as their daily food (Exodus 16).Each day Israelites had to collect enough of God’s miraculous provision to feed them for that day, but on the sixth day they had to collect enough for two days. The seventh day was essential so the Israelites could have a regular day of rest, a day of total dependency on God for their provision and were not allowed to make their own provision.
God set a pattern in which the people would be regularly reminded that they are in His care, they do not have to provide for themselves, but they are called to live in a relationship based on faith that God will always meet their daily needs. The writer of the psalms put it this way:
Come let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.’- Psalm 95:6-7
The psalmist goes on to say that we must not harden our hearts or become disobedient because then we will be unable to enter His rest.As Christians we must have regular, weekly reminders that God is our provider but when we are surrounded by a 24/7 culture it is hard to make one day a week special, a Sabbath. It can become a quieter day, a day we go to church, but do we enter His rest? Are we reminded that we are ‘under His care’ and in His hands? As Christians we must be diligent to work hard at what God has called us to do, but we must never become confident in our own ability to provide and therefore become less and less dependent on God.
I don’t know where your summer holiday destination is but let us make our destination ‘rest!’I pray this summer we don’t just have a holiday, but that we are refreshed by entering His ‘rest!’Set some time aside to actively remember and fix our thoughts on God, our source of life, our Lord and Master.Find time to ‘rest’ from our efforts, purposefully placing our lives again in His tender care and casting all our troubles on to Him.Then, and only then, will we be refreshed with the waterfalls of His love (Psalm 42:7).Again we will enter His ‘rest’, the place where we find ourselves embraced by the loving arms of the Father, in his loving care, the most relaxing place to be!
Paul, Mark and Carlitos set off on August 30th so not long to go now and no doubt they are making their final preparations. The task they are undertaking, to cycle 1000 miles in 12 days is, quite frankly, inspirational! Please can we give a final pushto getting sponsorship money for them in aid of Compassion. This can be done in several ways; there is a sponsorship form at Hope Central, you can go to the ‘Just Giving’ link online as detailed below or you can take sponsorship forms from the information desk at Church to distribute. Many of you have already done this so thank you for your efforts and keep pushing—it’s for an amazing cause. Together we can make a difference!
